Silver currency saw its end in the U.S. with the passage of the Coinage Act of 1965, which removed all silver content from nickels and dimes. In addition, it reduced the silver content of the Kennedy Half Dollar, produced from 1965 through 1970, from 90 percent to 40 percent. With the discontinuation of silver money, this form of currency substantially increased in value for investors and collectors alike.
